Car sales up 13 pc in May; 2-wheelers increase 22 pc

MAY brought better news for the domestic automobile industry with passenger car sales regaining momentum and the commercial vehicles segment witnessing a marginal growth after a dip in sales the previous month.

According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), passenger car sales jumped 13 per cent to 68,516 units in May 2005 compared to 60,618 units the same month in the previous year.

Cumulative sales of passenger cars during the first two months of the current fiscal grew 13.32 per cent to 1,32,446 units (1,16,873 units). Cumulative sales of passenger vehicles (including passenger cars, utility vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles) during April-May 2005 rose 13.11 per cent to 1,71,194 units (1,51,342).

Meanwhile, commercial vehicle sales during May 2005 grew marginally to 23,546 (23,442 units).

Though sales increased marginally during May, total sales declined 6.5 per cent to 40,425 units in the first two months of the fiscal(43,225 units).

Two-wheeler sales rose 22.23 per cent during May to 5,58,518 units(4,56,923 units), with motorcycles driving the bulk of growth. Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto powered sales in the domestic motorcycle segment to 4,56,568 units in May, up 26 per cent against 3,61,147 units in May last.
