The Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, launching the 2005 weather insurance scheme `Varsha Bima' of the Agriculture Insurance Company (AIC) in the Capital on Thursday. The insurance will cover two lakh farmers, who will pay 4-8 per cent of their crop value as premium. The scheme will cover 13 crops in 10 States up to June 30. AIC will start compensating farmers for either excess or deficient rainfall from August after ascertaining the real picture of monsoon. Mr Suparas Bhandari, CMD, AIC, who is seen with Mr Chidambaram, said his company would launch exclusive insurance for cash crops such as coffee, tea and rubber later this year.
