DESPITE significant changes in April in the form of introduction of the valued-added tax (VAT) regime and the new emission and safety norms, the domestic automobile industry, except commercial vehicles, saw a healthy growth rate during the month.
Domestic passenger car sales grew 13.6 per cent in April from a year earlier. From April 1, only vehicles meeting Euro III norms (which also came with a higher price tag) could be sold in 11 major cities including Delhi and Chennai.
Car sales in April rose to 63,930 units from 56,255 units in the same month of 2004, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed.
Though overall growth in the first four months of the calendar year has been slow, analysts expect the industry to grow 14-15 per cent in the current year with new car launches and loan schemes boosting demand.
Motorcycle sales in April jumped 26 per cent to 4,38,273 (348,139) units. Helped by growing demand for ungeared scooters, sales of scooters increased by 9.8 per cent to 78,313 units in April from 71,306 units in the same month last year.
But, sales of commercial vehicles fell 14.7 per cent to 16,879 units during the month, down from 19,783 in April 2004. Analysts point out that some niche segments have suffered after the implementation of VAT. While medium and heavy commercial vehicles segment showed a decline of 20 per cent to 9,576 units, sales of light commercial vehicles dipped by 5.6 per cent to 7,303 units in April 2005.
