Work on Kochi LNG project to begin next Jan

Mony K. Mathew

Thiruvananthapuram , May 8

THE work on the proposed LNG terminal of Petronet in Kochi is slated to commence in January next with the process of pre-qualification of bidders for awarding EPC contract expected to be completed by this month-end.

After the pre-qualification, bids will be invited in June and the contract could be finalised by the end of the year, according to senior Industry Department officials who are closely associated with the project.

In the event, the work on the project will start in January next year. If everything goes well, the much-awaited terminal and the related facilities will be ready for commissioning sometime in June 2009, one of the officials said.

The terminal will have storage capacity for five million tonnes of LNG, instead of 2.5 million tonnes as originally envisaged. The capacity has been enhanced in anticipation of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) utilising the terminal for storage of the gas required for the expansion of its Kayamkulam power plant.

Petronet has already entered into agreements with a host of industrial units in and around Kochi for offtake of gas and is also laying a pipeline to transport gas to Coimbatore.
