Procurement, arrivals of wheat lower

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 6

MARKET arrivals and procurement of wheat by official agencies continue to indicate a lower-than-expected wheat crop for this year. Arrivals have been lower by 10.12 lakh tonnes (lt) in various mandis across the country and progressive procurement is down by 10.41 lt as on Thursday.

According to an official data, a total of 148.1 lt have arrived in various mandis in the country during the ongoing 2005-06 rabi marketing season (April-June), which is below the 158.22 lt figure for the corresponding period of 2004-05.

Moreover, progressive procurement by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and State agencies has also been lower at 139.2 lt (149.61 lt).

As wheat procurement does not show any signs of improving even in the last leg, it appears that total wheat procurement for the Central pool during 2005-06 would end up being lower than the projected 180 lt. Wheat procurement hit an all-time high of 206.30 lt during 2001-02, after which it fell to 190.55 lt and 158.01 lt in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons respectively.

During the current marketing season (till May 5), market arrivals have been lower compared to the corresponding position last year in Punjab (88.75 lt versus 92.89 lt), Haryana (44.5 lt versus 50.39 lt), Rajasthan (2.64 lt versus 4.06 lt) and Uttar Pradesh (3.29 lt versus 5.87 lt).

The procurement front reflects similar trend in various States. While Punjab has procured 86.51 lt this season as compared to a much higher 90.63 lt last year, Haryana is no different (44.03 lt versus 49.63 lt). Similarly, other States like Rajasthan (1.18 lt versus 2.43 lt) and Uttar Pradesh (3.04 versus 4.74 lt) are showing much lower levels of procurement this year.
