Health Govt asked to check clinics promising stem cell cure Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 2 The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, has asked the Government to check clinics making claims of curing various diseases using stem cells. The committee had sought the views of the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on the authenticity of the claims made by several clinics promising stem cell cure for diseases such as muscular dystrophy, neuromuscular disorder, stroke, liver cirrhosis and diabetes. ICMR, in its response, had said that very few centres have approached it for approval. Stem cells are primal, undifferentiated cells, which have the unique potential to produce any kind of cell in the body. Medical researchers believe stem cells can change the face of human disease by repairing specific tissues or growing organs. Delhi-based NuTech Mediaworld, which had submitted incomplete papers, had been asked by ICMR to submit a detailed procedure and protocol, including the source of stem cells used for therapy. "The applicant, however, failed to provide the same even after several reminders," ICMR said. The Drug Controller General of India had asked ICMR to prepare appropriate guidelines to help regulate stem cell research in the country. The Government is in process of finalising the draft rules, after receiving suggestions. The draft envisages the setting up of a multi-disciplinary National Apex Committee that will monitor stem cell research in the country. This apex committee will examine all proposals; centres involved in research also have to be registered with it. The Parliamentary Committee has asked the Government to expedite the drafting of the guidelines.
