Vegetables, meat, fish to attract 4 per cent VAT in Maharashtra

MEAT, poultry, fish, fruits and vegetables will attract 4 per cent value-added tax. Dry fruits and tea will have 4 per cent VAT for 12 months, said Mr B.C. Khatua, Sales Tax Commissioner, Maharashtra, while speaking to the media on Sunday.

"The Sales Tax department has prepared a public notification, earmarking VAT levies on essential commodities. It will be soon sent for the Chief Ministerial assent and from there on it will be available in the public domain," Mr Khatua added.

Flour, maida, besan, suji, handspun khadi cloth, food grains available from public distribution system, branded and non-branded bread have been permanently exempted from VAT levy. Coconut and Solapur bed sheet have been exempted from VAT for 12 months, Mr Khatua said. Comb, paper and plastic paper cups, feeding bottles will attract four per cent VAT.

A select range of medical devices will attract four per cent VAT, however the Government will also bring out a separate notification for these devices, Mr Khatua added.
