Telecommunications Tata Indicom to invest Rs 400 cr in Karnataka Our Bureau
Bangalore , April 28 CELLULAR service provider Tata Indicom will invest over Rs 400 crore during the current fiscal to upgrade its network and facilities in Karnataka. "This fiscal, we will change the gear and accelerate our growth," Mr Prabhat Pani, the Tata Teleservices' Chief Operating Officer for Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, told reporters on Thursday. He said over Rs 1,200 crore has already been invested in the State since it began its operations in 2001. In 2004-05, the service provider invested around Rs 400 crore in Karnataka. Mr Pani said during the current fiscal, most towns in Karnataka would be networked. About 130 towns have already been networked. The service provider also plans to grow its retail outlets like True Value Hub and True Value Express in the State. It will also offer its services through mobile showrooms. These showrooms will travel across the State offering services like post-paid mobile and Walky connections and true-paid, Walky pre-paid and recharge coupons as well as the change of tariff plans and payment of bills. Currently, Tata Indicom has a 3 per cent market share in the mobile space whose total size in the State is about 35 lakh, while in the fixed line space, it has a share of 9.2 per cent. The current size of the market for fixed lines in the State is over 25 lakh subscribers. The cumulative subscriber base of Tata Indicom is about 3.5 lakh. Mr Pani said 25 per cent of its revenues come from the corporate sector. He said another area of growth for the company has been the pay telephony segment. It currently has 12,000 such booths, half of which are located in Bangalore.
