Alliances & Joint Ventures CM moots jt venture for alumina plant in Vizag Our Bureau
Hyderabad , April 22 THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has urged National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco) and the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) to consider joining hands to set up alumina plant in Visakhapatnam. According to an official release, Dr Reddy held a preliminary meeting on Friday with the officials of Nalco, APMDC, Tribal Welfare and other departments on the feasibility for the alumina plant. Nalco, a Union Government undertaking, had evinced interest in setting up an alumina plant utilising bauxite ore available in Visakhapatnam district. "However, since the APMDC has the right of mining bauxite ore, the Chief Minister advised both APMDC and Nalco officials to examine the feasibility of taking up the project jointly," the release said. Dr Reddy wanted them to discuss all issues relating to forest, environment and habitations in the agency area. He has directed the departments of Tribal Welfare and Technical Education to impart training in mining technology to the tribal youth so that they could also be involved in the project. In this connection, the Chief Minister has categorically said, "Their sense of belonging to the agency area must be protected. Their welfare should be taken care of in all respects. Any project that we promote in the agency area should help the uplift of tribals. Any approach in respect of this project should not be detrimental to the interests of the local tribals."
