Boosting agri-exports

This is with reference to the editorial "Whither agri-exports?" (Business Line, April 12), which talks of the lack of adequate thrust for agri-exports in the new trade policy. In addition, the editorial emphasised the need for improving trade in favour of agriculture and taking in a comprehensive view of the entire agricultural system for promoting agri-exports.

Infrastructure needs are well known. Apart from this, a list of all agri-export products, region-wise, should be drawn up and special schemes implemented to promote their export.

The problem of plenty needs to be solved. In this context, why not have a look at the import of edible oil that is a big strain on our foreign exchange? Why can't we take the required steps to encourage oilseeds production and aim at self-sufficiency?

Apart from diversification of crops, improved seeds and dry-land farming should also help. State governments should be supported to take more interest and initiative.
