Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 13

TRUCK and bus tyre production for February 2005 touched 8.97 lakh units as against a production level of 8.80 lakh units in February last year.

Production performance in this category stood at 9.68 lakh units and 9.47 lakh units in December 2004 and January 2005 respectively. Truck and bus tyre production accounted for over 60 per cent of the total turnover of the tyre industry in value terms.

A tyre industry official held that the production performance in February 2005 would not be strictly comparable to the production performance in January 2005 as the month of February had lesser number of working days.

On the export front, the latest data released by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ATMA) showed that truck and bus tyre exports during February 2005 stood at 2.19 lakh units as against 2.21 lakh in January 2005. Exports in the month of December 2004 stood at 2.44 lakh tyres.

Passenger car tyre production by ATMA member companies for the month of February 2005 stood at 8.80 lakh tyres as against 8.52 lakh tyres in the same month during the previous year. The companies had in January 2005 recorded a production level of 10.57 lakh tyres.

Production of light commercial vehicle tyres during February 2005 stood at 3.05 lakh as against 3.53 lakh in January 2005.
