New Delhi , April 11

THE Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will flag off the Uttar Sampark Kranti Express and dedicate the Jammu Tawi-Udhampur rail line to the nation at Udhampur on April 13. The 54.85-km Jammu-Udhampur rail line project, which is part of the ambitious Jammu-Udhampur-Shrinagar-Baramula rail link, will have a completion cost of Rs 515 crore.

Jammu-Udhampur new broad gauge rail line connects Jammu with Udhampur, an important district head quarter of the State. The project construction involved challenges like building of high embankments, long and tall bridges across deep gorges, long tunnels and deep cutting of the mountains, said an official statement.

The Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, the Ministers of State, Mr N.J. Rathwa and Mr R. Velu; Mr R.K. Singh, Chairman, Railway Board, and other senior officials of the Ministry of Railways will be present on the occasion.

This railway line will further boost the tourist traffic for the valley, as the travelling time by road beyond the proposed railhead at Udhampur will be reduced.
