Liver transplant at Global Hospitals

MR Abdul Haleem Magdi (48) is one of the lakhs of Egyptians infected with hepatitis C that may lead to liver cirrhosis and cancer. About 20 per cent of the 62 million Egyptians suffer from hepatitis C.
Doctors say the disease assumed proportions of an epidemic after a Government campaign there during 1950-80 to control schistosomiasis.
Mr Magdi developed liver cirrhosis and has been suffering for the last three years.
Doctors in Cairo told him that only liver transplantation could save him.
Since Egypt did not have facilities for cadaver liver transplantation, he and his brother, Dr Sabri, a cardiologist in Dubai, began looking for help elsewhere. After making enquiries, they zeroed in on Global Hospitals in Hyderabad.
Presenting Mr Magdi before the media after a successful transplant, Dr Mohammed Rela, Dr K.V. Subba Rao and Dr Dharmesh Kapoor, said the Egyptian, who came to Hyderabad on January 29, could find a donor within a month.
The kin of a Defence staffer, killed in a road accident and declared brain dead, came forward to donate the deceased's liver.
