Shipping Inventory build-up at Nhava Sheva Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 31 FEARS of another round of congestion at the P&O-operated Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) at Jawaharlal Nehru port were raised, as the port experienced a spurt in cargo flows in the last two weeks. A senior official of NSICT, however, allayed the fears, stating that although there had been a rise in inventory levels at the year, the situation was under control. The alarm button was pressed in the third week of this month, when on March 17 the yard inventory reached a level of 13,500 TEUs. This was mostly on account of exporters bringing into the yard export consignments that were more than the vessels could take. Subsequently, the terminal also witnessed a surge in import volumes, pushing up the build-up of containers on the terminal. The terminal authorities had sounded a warning to importers that "it may become necessary to curtail import discharge from vessels if import volumes are not evacuated from the terminal before the arrival of the next vessel seven days later." However, with the exporters and importers speeding up cargo evacuation, the inventory levels were brought down substantially. "At present, the inventory level at NSICT is less than 11,000 TEUs and there is nothing to worry about," the NSICT official said.
