Mixed response to VAT bandh

THE State-wide bandh on Wednesday by traders against the `piecemeal' implementation of VAT (Value Added Tax) evoked mixed response.
However, AP Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Trade (APFCCT) claimed that the bandh was total throughout the State.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Ammanabolu Vijay Kumar, President of APFCCT, said there was no point in implementing VAT, as many States were not joining the regime on April 1.
"There is no uniformity. There will be VAT States and non-VAT States. This will create problems for the trading community," he said.
Non-VAT States such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, would comprise 50 per cent of the population. It is not fair to impose the new regime on the remaining population, he said.
He also charged that there was no uniformity in VAT rates. "Different States have different rates. This too will pose problems," he added.
The Chambers had asked its 2,500 members to send protest letters and telegrams to the Empowered Committee on VAT, Union Finance Minister, Chief Minister, Minister for Commercial Taxes, and district level officials.
