Bangalore , March 26

GOOGLE India announced the winners of the Google India Code Jam 2005, its first computer programming competition in India and South Asia, where a Singaporean student Adrian Poernomo, has been placed first in the finals held here on Saturday. The contest had attracted over 14,000 participants from six countries in the initial rounds with 50 making the final.

"The Google India Code Jam demonstrates the value Google places on excellent programming. In addition to celebrating the top programmers in the region, we also hope that the competition will provide further opportunities to attract strong computer scientists," said Mr Krishna Bharat, Principal Scientist and Centre Head, Bangalore R&D, Google India.

The contest was opened to participants throughout Southern Asia in February and contestants competed online to qualify for the top 500 spots in the first round. These 500 qualifiers then battled for the 50 final positions. The 50 finalists were flown to the Google R&D Centre in Bangalore for the championship round which took place on Saturday.

This is the third Google Code Jam and the first in India. Last years' Code Jam in the US was won by Sergio Sancho, a computer science student at the University of Buenos Aires.

Prior to the first Google Code Jam, Google held a smaller programming contest and hired the winner, who is now part of its New York-based engineering team, Mr Bharat said.
