Spices & Condiments Japan shows interest in Indian vanilla G.K. Nair
Kochi , March 23 THE potential for export of cured Indian vanilla and vanilla extracts to Japan is good as there is growing interest to introduce natural vanillin in the premium segment of ice creams, according to Mr S. Kannan, Director (Marketing), Spices Board. Based on the discussions with the visitors to the Spices Board stand at the Foodex Japan 2005 and observations, "I feel there is adequate potential for promoting cured vanilla beans and vanilla extract (Co2 process) for introducing among the premium segment of ice-cream manufacturing units", Mr Kannan, who was in Japan to participate in the Foodex last week told Business Line. The Japanese are interested in the premium segment of ice cream using natural flavour. Since India has the capability for supplying cured vanilla beans and vanilla extract (Co2), this opportunity could be tapped properly and "we may also attempt to promote ice-cream with natural flavours of cardamom, pepper and nutmeg", he said. Organic pepper, green pepper and extracts of these organic spices are preferred for end-product manufacture in Japan, he said. . During the participation, a range of spices were put on display. Discussions with the Members of All Nippon Spice Association (ANSA) included a visit of the Japanese official to Kerala, on the food-borne diseases, traceability, reported contamination of chilli powder and pre-certification system proposed by the Japanese government.
