`Closure of units due to labour unrest rarer': Minister

Our Bureau

Kochi , March 23

THE State Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran, has said that incidence of closure of industrial units due to labour problems has come down marginally in the State in the recent period.

A study on the reasons for the closure of industrial units during the last five years had revealed that the percentage of closure due to labour unrest was only 5 to 6 per cent, he said while inaugurating the Social Dialogue for Labour Policy Reforms: Creating & Ensuring Decent Work held here under the joint auspices of the Federation of India Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), New Delhi, All India Organisation of Employers (AIOE), New Delhi, and Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI), Kochi.

The labour is not a major problem in Kerala and the Government is keen to sort out whatever problems still remained, the Minister said.

In his welcome address, the ICCI President, Mr K.S. Sabu, stated the State could not make any headway in the matter of industrialisation and employment generation even though it has abundant supply of both skilled and unskilled labour. A solution to the problem of unemployment lies in rapid industrialisation, he said.

Mr O.P. Lohia, President of All-India Organisation of Employers, said the existing labour policy, which is old and rigid, did not strike a balance between industrial growth and employment generation. The competitive pressure following globalisation has been forcing industry to be flexible, lean and mean.

Mr S. Sreenivasan, Labour Commissioner, chaired the technical session. Mr Tampan Thomas M.P, National President, HMS, Mr Sanjay Mariwala, Managing Director, Kancor Flavours & Extracts Ltd., Mr T Damu, Vice-President, Indian Hotels Company Ltd and Mr N R Pai, Chief Executive, Aspinwall Group presented papers at the session.

The ICCI Vice-President, Mr Balagopala B Pai, proposed a vote of thanks.
