Dell opens third contact centre

New Delhi , March 21

GLOBAL personal computer giant Dell today launched its third customer contact centre in the country at Mohali in Punjab, and said it plans to ramp up headcount at the facility to 1,500 in the next one year.

The centre was launched by the Dell Inc Chairman, Mr Michael Dell, at Mohali in the presence of the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, and senior executives of the company. The 180,000-sq-ft centre - that would initially offer technical support and customer care to Dell customers in the US - includes a cafeteria, gymnasium and other modern recreational facilities, a company release said here.

"Dell's new customer support centre is part of the company's continuing commitment to India and its globalisation strategy," the release said adding that the new centre would begin operations on March 28 with about 300 employees. Mr Dell, however, did not disclose the investment that the company had made in the facility. "We cannot disclose exact investment figures, but we can say we have invested tens of million dollars in India," Mr Dell added.

Dell established its first India customer contact centre in Bangalore in May 2001 while its second centre, in Hyderabad, opened in March 2003. These three contact centres are part of a global network of approximately 50 centres Dell operates around the world. Apart from three captive contact centres, Dell outsources work to Wipro Spectramind, 24/7 Customer, EXL Services and Sutherland.

Although the company expands its contact centres and research and development centres in India, it has no plans to set up a manufacturing base here because of the market conditions. "We do not have a manufacturing facility in every country we sell in. For setting up a manufacturing base, a large market, good supply base and export-import environment is necessary. We do not have that environment in India," Mr Dell said.
