Shipping Kochi port resumes timber handling Our Bureau
Kochi , March 21 THE Kochi port has resumed handling timber after a gap of 23 years as part of its initiatives to build cargo volumes and compete effectively with neighbouring ports. The vessel, m.v. Paulijing, had arrived in the port with 4,733 tonnes of timber from Myanmar on March 8 and sailed out on March 16, completing the discharge, thus beginning a new era of handling timber cargo at Kochi. Due to unfavourable handling conditions for timber, Kochi had lost ground to Tuticorin and New Mangalore ports in timber handling. Following marketing efforts initiated by the management, the port has since been able to convince the trade on the advantages of shipping timber through Kochi, said Dr Jacob Thomas, Chairman of the port. He said although the port had not handled timber for a very long time, unloading operations were carried out smoothly. In order to attract cargo, the authorities had introduced customer-friendly wharfage of Rs 34 per cubic metre and land rent of Rs 2 per square metre per fortnight, he said. Encouraged by the port's pro-active and positive approach on timber import, he said more enquiries are coming in.
