EMPLOYEES in the defence laboratories in Hyderabad will have quick access to information of their interest, thanks to the digital library set up at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL).
Defence scientists can read the soft copy (through Internet) of the latest developments, published in international scientific journals the same day.
Formally opening the digital library on Thursday, the Director of DRDL, Mr Prahlada, said in six months time, all the labs under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Hyderabad will be networked to access the digital library facilities.
A fibre-optic cable link is proposed to be taken up. At present, the DRDL, Advanced Scientific Laboratory and the Research Centre Imarat are linked through a single network, he told Business Line.
The other major DRDO labs are the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory , Defence Electronics Research Laboratory and Advanced Numerical Research and Analysis Group .
Once the network is in place, the routine delays of getting a hardcopy of international journals after a couple of weeks, handling of copies, the costs of subscriptions, taking xerox and storing would be saved.
The library services would also be available on intranet (D-Net), with resources including databases in aerospace.
