World grain meet to discuss free trade

Our Bureau

MUMBAI: "Expanding global markets - removing the obstacles" will be the theme of next IGC grains conference 2005 to be held in London on June 15.

Developments in the global animal feed industry and their likely impact on international trade will be among the key topics to be addressed at the conference, in addition to changes the WTO Doha negotiations may bring to the grains sector.

According to International Grains Council (IGC), the event-sponsor, large 2004 crops boosted world grain supplies and resulted in some stock-building; but demand for food, feed and industrial uses continues to expand. Although grain prices are mostly lower than a year ago, importers and exporters had to contend with historically high ocean freight rates.

Speakers will examine current developments and the outlook for grains in 2005-06 and beyond, IGC said. Buyers, sellers, end-users and government representatives from around the world are likely to participate.
