Meet on translational research from tomorrow

TAKING the results of basic research from the laboratory to the patients in the shortest period, especially in the medical field, will be the focus of the first, two-day, annual international conference on translational research beginning here on March 19.
The conference aims to build bridges between the investigators in the labs and practitioners in the hospitals to expedite the process of taking the benefits of research to people, explained Dr Chitti R. Moorthy, Chairman of the conference.
The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Apollo Cancer Hospital, CURE Foundation, New York Medical College and the Westchester Medical Center in the US are the main sponsors of this conference.
Talking to newspersons, Dr Moorthy, Director, Department of Radiation Medicine and Radiology at the Westchester Medical Center, said the need for translational Research or Bench (bench) to the Bedside (patient) or B2B is necessary because of the huge costs, time involved in development of new drugs, treatment methods etc., especially in tackling cancers.
The conference will focus on developments in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers and benign diseases of pancreas, brain, spine and eye. About 300 scientists and clinicians are taking part, he said.
Dr Moorthy along with Dr Usha K Srinivas of the CCMB said Translational Research would play a significant role in cutting down costs, time for clinical trials and increase benefits to the people, by bringing together basic research and clinical doctors and exchanging information.
They said India could take a lead in this area, since it has manpower, IT skills and also a huge demand for medicine and health.
