Our Correspondent

Madurai , March 17

ABOUT 3,200 hectares of wasteland has been brought under cultivation under the comprehensive wasteland development scheme incorporating a micro watershed approach in Theni district.

According to the District Collector, Mr Rajesh Lakhoni, the objective of the scheme was to ensure soil and water conservation and re-greening of wasteland through horticulture, agro-forestry, tree-borne oil seeds, medicinal plants and fodder.

Participatory wasteland development, wasteland development and reclamation of salt-affected lands were three major components of the scheme. The cost of the development per hectare has worked out to be Rs 8,500 and contribution from each farmer Rs 3,650 for planting works.

The Department of Agriculture Engineering has sunk bore-wells to meet the irrigation requirements.

Appropriate technical support, cropping strategies and adequate funds have been provided where scarcity of water has been acute. Special water and soil conservation techniques have been adopted.
