TRUCK and bus tyre production continued to be on a roll in January 2005 if one were to go by the latest production data released by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ATMA).
For January, the production performance in the truck and bus category, which accounted for over 60 per cent of total turnover (in value terms) stood at 9.47 lakh units. This performance, although lower than the production level of December 2004, was higher than the production level of 9.34 lakh units achieved in the same month of the previous year.
The domestic tyre industry had in December 2004 recorded the best production performance so far in the current fiscal at 9.68 lakh units of truck and bus tyres.
An industry official held that the strong production performance in the months of December and January would be used to serve the demand and not necessarily result in an inventory pile-up situation. "There are no signs of an inventory-pile up situation. There is no slackening of demand," the official said.
Production in the truck and bus tyre category stood at 9.22 lakh tyres in October 2004, 9.23 lakh units in September 2004, 9.39 lakh in November 2004.
On the export front, truck and bus tyre exports in January stood at 2.21 lakh tyres. Exports stood at 2.44 lakh tyres in December 2004 and 2.31 lakh in November 2004.
According to the data released by ATMA, passenger car tyre production by ATMA member companies in January stood at 10.57 lakh tyres, against production level of 11.28 lakh tyres in December 2004. The ATMA members had reported a production level of 9.89 lakh tyres during November 2004.
Production of light commercial vehicle tyres in January stood at 3.53 lakh tyres, against 3.56 lakh tyres in December 2004.
