Strategy Fortune in talks to launch Indian edition
V.K. Varadarajan
Bangalore , March 17
FORTUNE magazine is in talks with several publications in India to launch an edition in the country. "We are looking at various partners to publish the Indian version of Fortune," the magazine's International Editor, Mr Robert Friedman, told Business Line. He said the talks are at an early stage. The magazine is also exploring the option of syndicating some of its content to publications in India. Mr Friedman said the magazine would abide by the Indian regulatory requirements for publishing foreign magazines in the country. He said the magazine would be interested in following the business model in China where the group publishes a Chinese language edition and has a circulation of about one lakh copies. Fortune has a licensing agreement with a separate company in China but has no equity stake in that company. It gets a share of the advertising revenue generated by its Chinese edition called Fortune China and some annual fee. He said the company translates the content of the magazine into the Chinese language and generates its own local content as well. "I think that's the model for India," he added. He said currently the readership in India was about 5,000, which was far lesser than the circulation in Hong Kong. "But we found out during our visit to Delhi, we are actually available in several newsstands there," he said. "I think we are too expensive and we have not invested enough in promoting the magazine in India. There is an ongoing battle on how to price the magazine. Some of them say that it should be priced higher because it is a premier magazine. But for better circulation, we need to price it lower. We will figure this out," Mr Friedman said.
