Sick Units Kerala CM holds meet on Indal unit Our Bureau
Kochi , March 15 THE Chief Minister, Mr Ommen Chandy, has offered to help the Indian Aluminium Industries (Indal) of the Aditya Birla Group at nearby Eloor for reopening its smelter unit, which has been shut down for the past 19 months. The meeting called by the Chief Minister in Thiruvananthapuram was attended by the Ministers of Industry, Electricity and senior government officials, representatives of the company management and Power Trading Corporation (PTC) and trade union leaders to find out solutions to the ongoing crisis. Mr Chandy had advised the management to take up the electricity issue such as reduction in wheeling charges with State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC). In that event, the Government would recommend its demand, he said. Besides, the Government would be ready to grant permission to set up captive power plants including hydel projects, Mr K.N. Gopinath, General Secretary, Trade Union leader who has attended the meeting told Business Line. The management representative said though the smelter unit had been closed the workers were being paid for the past 19 months and it was ready to consider re-opening of the unit if steps were taken to make available power at affordable rates. The meeting had also asked the management to submit a report to the Government on the company's requirement of power and the affordable tariff at which the unit could be operated viably. Those who attended the meeting included Ministers Mr Ibrahim Kunju (Industry) and Mr Aryadan Mohammed (Electricity), the Opposition Leader, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, Mr K. Mohemmadali and Mr K. Babu (MLAs) and trade union leaders - Mr M. Sambasivan, Mr A.S. Murali and Mr K.J. Divine.
