New fears

S. Gopakumar

High tides and rough seas lashed several coastal areas in Thiruvananthapuram early Saturday morning causing concern among residents. According to fishermen in Poonthura, a coastal area in the district, changes in the behaviour of the sea were noticed at about 1 a.m.

Fishermen say that such unusually rough seas and high tides are not normal at this time of the year. Incursions by the sea have damaged boats at some places in the district and disrupted fishing activity. However, there are no reports of any injuries from anywhere in the district. Early Friday morning, rising water levels along the coastal areas of Ernakulam district in Kerala and Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu had caused concern.
