Seed out of VAT purview

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Minister for Agriculture, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, has said that seed meant for cultivation of crops has been deleted from the list of items that come under the purview of value-added tax (VAT) to be implemented from April 1.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the Minister said that the previous NDA Government at the Centre had proposed 4 per cent VAT on seed. However, following a representation from the Chief Minister, Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and his Cabinet colleagues, the Union Government has recently agreed to keep seed out of the purview of VAT.

He said that this measure would benefit farmers to an extent of Rs 60 crore as Rs 1,500 worth of seed pertaining to various crops was being sold annually.
