Railways Pipavav Rail for conversion of Bhiladi-Samadari track Mamuni Das
New Delhi , March 7 IN a move to improve the freight connectivity from Kandla and Mundra ports to Punjab and Rajasthan, Pipavav Railway Corporation Ltd (PRCL) has recommended that the gauge conversion of railway track from Bhiladi to Samadari should be taken up. Terming the project as bankable and one that would be viable in the first year of operations itself, PRCL said that the conversion of the metre gauge track into broad gauge would require about Rs 300 crore. "There is a case for investing in the track by sourcing funds from the Railways, port players, etc since various costs including the interest on loan, maintenance and other operating costs can be recovered in the first year itself," said senior officials. PRCL has made these recommendations in a recently submitted a feasibility study for the gauge conversion to Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL). At present, the rail line between Bhiladi and Samadari is a metre gauge rail line, whereas most of the rail lines around these places are broad gauge. Converting this track into broad gauge will help develop an alternate, shorter route for Gandhidham-Ajmer connectivity - the 400-km route will be shorter by about 100 kilometres, informed a senior official. The rail route used between Ajmer and Gandhidham is via Marwar, Palanpur and Viramgam, which is already congested with passenger trains, he added. "When in place, this rail link could be used by power stations in Punjab and Rajasthan to transport imported coal to their plants. As of now, these power plants source their coal from Eastern UP and Bihar," said the official.
