Telecommunications `BSNL may end fiscal with 12 m more phone lines' Our Bureau
Pune , March 5 THE Union Minister of Telecom and IT, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, has announced that about one million landline connections from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd would be rolled out here this month and the country would see an addition of 12 million landline connections by the end of the current fiscal year ending March. He was talking to newspersons in Baramati at the venue of Fifth Annual Baramati Initiative on ICT and Development at the Vidya Pratisthan Institute of Information Technology. He noted that the French major Alcatel has tied up with ITI that would supply the telecom equipment required for this. Asked about the new IT Policy, Mr Maran said the group headed by the IT Secretary has handed over the report and is expected to be tabled within the next five weeks. Asked about the increase in telephone penetration in the country, he noted that about 56,000 villages were yet to be connected and all these would be done within two years. Mr Maran noted that the theme of the conference, `Education for the underprivileged - information and communication technology (ICT) as a catalyst for development' was the need of the hour.
