Cashew Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Cashew exports may top Rs 2,500 crore G. K. Nair
Kochi , March 2 IF the current upward trend in the export of cashew kernels is any indication, total exports during the current fiscal are likely to cross Rs 2500 crore. There has been a substantial increase both in volume, due to increase in demand, and value following the rise in unit value. Exports during April - January 2004-05 stood at 1,04,556 tonnes valued at Rs 2,206.51 crore, against 81,626 tonnes worth Rs 1,460.05 crore in the same period last fiscal. Thus, the increase in terms of volume is 22,930 tonnes, while that in value is Rs 747.46 crore, Mr K. Sasi Varma, Secretary, Cashew Export Promotion Council of India, told Business Line. He said the exports in January `05 stood at 10,291 tonnes valued at Rs 230.96 crore compared to 9,587 tonnes worth Rs 172.10 crore in January 2004. Total exports in 2003-04 were Rs 1,804 crore, against Rs 1,933 crore the previous year, he said. Mr Varma attributed the tangible increase in value to the rise in unit value, which went up to an average Rs 211.04 a kg during April-January 2004-05 from Rs 178.87 in the corresponding period last fiscal. In fact, the unit value realised in January 2005 was Rs 224.43.
Export of cashew nut shell liquid moved up from 5,726 tonnes valued at Rs 5.87 crore in April - January 2003-04 to 7,443 tonnes worth Rs 7.83 crore this fiscal. However, there was a substantial increase in the import of raw cashew nuts. During April - January 2004-05, imports stood at 5,26,023 tonnes, valued at Rs 1,960.24 crore, against 4,08,313 tonnes worth Rs 1,260 crore in the same period last fiscal year, he said. The unit value of raw nuts also increased to Rs 37.27 a kg from Rs 30.86.
