THE media and entertainment industry has been largely ignored in Budget 2005. Instead, the Finance Ministry has included certain other services in the tax net.
Direct-to-home (DTH) services as well as multi-system operators would now have to shell out service tax.
In addition, video-tape production to include recording of any programme, event or function on any media and includes post-production services would be included.
Even sound recording to include recording of sound on any media and includes post-production services would be covered.
However, Customs duty on specified parts of printing presses has been reduced from 20 per cent to 10 per cent.
Mr Ronnie Screwvala, CEO, UTV Software Communications Ltd: I would say it is a growth-oriented budget with a number of positives for the corporate sector.
The Finance Minister has clearly focused on long-term rural growth.
As for the media sector nothing was expected from the Union Budget as issues such as Entertainment Tax fall within the State Government purview while cable revenue issue is within the ambit of TRAI.
