Kolkata corporation to set up Rs 30-cr meat processing unit

Pratim Ranjan Bose

Kolkata , Feb. 21

AFTER a gap of six years, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has revived its proposal to replace all its four abattoirs in the city by setting up a Rs 30-crore modern meat processing plant at the upcoming Calcutta Leather Complex (CLC).

Though taken up as part of an Asian Development Bank-funded project to improve civic amenities in Kolkata, the project is expected to make the complex self sufficient with a captive supply of rawhide.

Sources said that KMC is in an advanced stage of discussion on the issue with M L Dalmiya & Co, the BOT partner of CLC, to acquire a 27-acre plot inside the complex. The total project cost is pegged at Rs 30 crore, of which Rs 25 crore is expected to be funded by ADB.

The proposed project will have four separate units, including a stockyard, where animals will be kept under observation for at least 24 hours; a slaughtering and flaying unit; a processing unit; and a rendering plant.

At the processing plant, the meat will be treated, packed and refrigerated while the rendering plant will be collecting the inedibles and converting them into tallow.
