The Hindu Business Line : Early implementation of Dindigul

A TEAM of office-bearers of the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, led by its President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, along with the Dindigul MP, Mr N.S.V. Chitthan, met the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr R. Velu, at New Delhi and submitted a pre-budget memorandum.

The memorandum, among others, has stressed the need for an early implementation of Dindigul-Sabarimala Broad Gauge (BG) Line Project via Periakulam as it provided the shortest route to Sabarimala, thronged by millions of pilgrims throughout the year from the southern districts.

It has further laid emphasis on full allocation of funds for the early completion of the doubling of BG line between Madurai and Dindigul, as it is vital for introducing additional trains in the route.

The chamber has sought the extension of few express trains and increase in frequency, among which are included the extension of Jodhpur-Chennai Express to Nagercoil, Hyderabad-Chennai Express to Madurai and increase in the frequency of Kanyakumari-Howrah Express, Madurai-Delhi (Nizamuddin) Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express etc.

The Chamber has demanded further, the introduction of a fast passenger (day) train between Madurai and Chennai, a direct train between Madurai and Tirupati and a JanShatapti Express between Chennai and Madurai.

The general demands made by the chamber include giving representation to the chamber in the National Railway Users Consultative Committee.
