THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Groundwater level in the State has been receding by 0.2 metres to 0.5 metres every year, according to a survey conducted by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).

The study singled out 151 blocks in the State — including Kasargod, Kodungalloor (Thrissur) and Chirayinkeezh (Thiruvananthapuram) — as among the most exploited, said Mr S.R. Tamta, Regional Director, CGWB, here on Monday.

Six of these have been categorised `critical,' Mr Tamta said while presiding over an awareness programme on protection and conservation of groundwater resources.

Though lower when compared to other States, a stage has been reached when authorities should reflect on what Mr Tamta described as `unsustainable' levels of exploitation of groundwater resources already reached in the State.
