THE first-ever AIDS clinical trials began on Monday in the city.
With one of the three volunteers being injected with the tgAAC09 preventive AIDS vaccine at the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) at around noon, India joins the big league of nations fighting against HIV/AIDS.
Talking to presspersons, the Chief Investigative Officer for the AIDS project at NARI, Dr Sanjay Mehendale, said the trials began amid tight security as the identities of those volunteers had to be kept secret. Around 34 volunteers, with about 20 of them women, had come forward for the trials.
He said the first phase, which would see 10 volunteers being injected with the vaccine, would be completed within the next three weeks. Similar trials are also under way in Germany and Belgium.
The tgAAC09 investigational vaccine candidate is being developed by an international partnership, including the Government of India, through the Indian Council Of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National AIDS Control Organisation and the non-profit International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).
