Software HCL Tech to expand Chennai operations Our Bureau
Chennai , Feb. 6 HCL Technologies plans to increase the number of seats in Chennai for its software business by 5,000 over the next two years. Its operations in the city currently account for 7,000 seats. Speaking to newspersons, Mr R. Vaidyanathan, Executive Vice-President and global HR head, said: "We have the second largest presence in the city after TCS." The company recently announced plans to set up a 50-acre campus in Noida. On whether it did not deviate from HCL's policy of having development centres well within any city's limits, he said: "We try to locate offices so that employees do not have to commute long distances to work. But Noida is such an area that wherever you are, a residential area is only 5-6 km away." As an aside, HCL also commented on some of its businesses. Industry watchers are anticipating a slowdown in the semiconductor business. They ascribe this to the fact that new manufacturing capacities have been built up and that once supply exceeds demand, prices will slump. This could affect companies who provide software to semiconductor makers. Mr Divakar Maddipatla, Executive Vice-President, said: "We have just come up from a slump. The Christmas season - as usual - saw a lot of silicon sales. We do not anticipate a slump this year. The semiconductor industry would grow. The issue is not whether it would grow but by how much." Asked if the takeover of PeopleSoft by Oracle would affect HCL Tech's revenues, a spokesperson for those practices said, "We cater to the requirements of both PeopleSoft and Oracle. Whichever way it swings would mean more business for us. If customers of older versions of PeopleSoft migrate to newer versions or to Oracle software itself, it means good news for us."
