E-Governance Centre allots Rs 500 cr for IT kiosks in villages Ambar Singh Roy
Bhubaneswar , Feb. 4 THE Government of India has earmarked Rs 500 crore for taking the information & communications technology revolution to the grassroots level in villages across the country. A draft paper, which is currently in circulation, is aimed at facilitating the setting up of Internet kiosks at the village level. The function of these kiosks would be to deliver Government and private services to the rural populace. Stating this on the sidelines of the National Conference on e-Governance being held here, a senior official of the Department of Information Technology, Government of India, said one lakh Internet kiosks would be set up in the current Plan period. The initiative would be driven by the administration at the district level, which in turn, will identify and assign village-level entrepreneurs who will run the kiosks. The official said the Government would ensure that the owners of the kiosks did not have to pay any connectivity charges since the initiative was part of the statewide area network project initiative of the Central Government.
