Rakesh Mehrotra likely to be new Concor MD

P. Manoj

New Delhi , Feb. 4

MR Rakesh Mehrotra, currently Director (Projects) of Concor, is tipped to become the new Managing Director of the company.

He will succeed Mr A.K. Kohli, whose tenure will end in July. "The name of Mr Mehrotra will now be put up to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for final approval," Government sources said.

Out of the 11 candidates called by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) for an interview on January 18, the fight for the top slot in the Railway PSU narrowed down to two internal contenders - Mr Rakesh Mehrotra and Mr P.G. Thyagrajan, currently Director looking after the company's international marketing and operations. While PESB plumped for Mr Thyagrajan, the Railway Ministry is understood to have preferred Mr Mehrotra for the post.

The impasse lasted for almost a week and eventually, the PESB decided to recommend Mr Mehrotra's the name.

"The PESB is only a recommendatory body. The administrative Ministry always has a very big say in the choice of candidates. After all, the Government is the ultimate employer," the sources said, rejecting accusations that there was any "impropriety" in the selection of Mr Mehrotra.

"Everything else being equal, it was decided to select somebody from among the internal candidates and the senior-most of them was chosen."

Though Mr Thyagrajan and Mr Mehrotra joined Concor on the same day, Mr Mehrotra, a 1973 batch Indian Railways Mechanical Service officer, is much senior to Mr Thyagrajan, a 1978 batch Indian Railways Traffic Service officer.

The third internal candidate, Mr S.C. Mishra, Director (Domestic), is much junior to them.
