THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Handling of bodies was one of the biggest problems that the Department of Health had to face in the aftermath of the tsunami in the State.

Recounting the experience, doctors taking part in a review meeting and workshop held here said mortuary facilities were appalling at the taluk hospitals where bodies started piling up. This necessitated SOS messages to Medical Colleges and private hospitals in the vicinity.

A disaster management committee had been set up three years ago under the State Planning Board supposedly with a blueprint of a disaster management plan. But its level of preparedness was thoroughly exposed in the face of disastrous tryst with Nature's fury, doctors said.
