THE Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a six-month extension of the World Bank assisted National Agricultural Technology Project till June 30.

There will be no fresh outgo because of the extension, as the additional expenditure will be covered through savings.

The National Agricultural Technology Project is aimed at improving the efficiency of the management systems of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and enhance the performance of priority research programmes in responding to the technological needs of farmers. It is designed to improve the effectiveness and the financial sustainability of the technology dissemination system with greater accountability to and participation from the farming community. The overall strategies of the project are to promote economic growth and social development in the context of micro-economic stability.

The project is being implemented jointly by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, ICAR, and the Department of Agriculture and Co-operation. Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to introduce the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Amendment Bill 2005 during the coming session of the Parliament to amend the 1985 Act.
