BSNL launches broadband service in Kerala

Our Bureau

Kochi , Feb. 2

BSNL Kerala Circle has launched its broadband service in the State by offering high-speed Internet access to begin with.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr S.A. Thomas, Chief General Manager, BSNL, Kerala Circle, said the company would soon launch various other services such as multi-cast video streaming, video on demand, video conferencing and music/movie download.

It had floated an expression of interest for content providers to provide these services on BSNL infrastructure, he added.

There has been an overwhelming response to the broadband service as BSNL had received 5,000 bookings in the State. Of this, he said, 900 bookings were from the Ernakulam SSA alone. A target of 1,500 connections up to March and 45,000 connections up to December is to be achieved by the Kerala Circle, he said.

At present there are about five sites set up in various parts of the city to provide the broadband services, which would be enhanced to 25 by March in the first phase. Additional sites had also been planned in several other parts in the State taking the number to 127 with a capacity of 22,000 broadband connections.

Purchase order has already been placed for the equipment for additional connections, he said.

Regarding the tariff, Mr S.R. Pillai, Princiapal General Manager, Ernakulam SSA, said there are two separate tariff packages for home and business. The home users can avail themselves of a minimum bandwidth download speed of 256 kbps at Rs 500 per month without security deposit, while business users will have to shell out Rs 1,200 monthly with two months rental as security deposit.

The DataOne broadband service for the home segment will have four monthly tariff plans of Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 1,800 and Rs 3,300 while corporate users have plans starting from Rs 1,200, Rs 3,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 9,000 depending on the data speed, data download-upload limit and additional usage charges.
