Events Environment fair in Kolkata from Feb 16 to 19 Our Bureau
Kolkata , Feb. 1 THE West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB), in collaboration with Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI), will organise Environment Fair in Kolkata from February 16 to 19. The participants will include a large number of environmental pollution control equipment manufacturers. Announcing this, the WBPCB Chairman, Dr Sudip K. Bannerjee, on Monday said that the fair had been organised to encourage people to take part in protecting the environment by adopting eco-friendly methods of production in every sphere of socio-economic activity. The theme of the fair would be `Towards a sustainable future.' Apart from the pollution control industry, various government departments, public sector organisations, educational institutions, research bodies and NGOs will also participate. Dr Bannerjee told presspersons that compared to other metros, Kolkata had so far shown little improvement in terms of restricting vehicular pollution. He, however, blamed lack of public awareness as the root cause of the problem as merely 18 per cent of vehicles observe the pollution control norms. He said that the pollution control board was now working to develop a low cost LPG kit for autorickshaws, arguably the single largest source of pollution in the city.
