New Delhi , Feb. 1

IN a bid to take technology to the masses, the Department of Information Technology has constituted a committee to review the goals of the `Technology Development for Indian Languages' programme and suggest technology development goals for the same.

The committee, which would be chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Information Technology, would identify projects that can result in products or services that meet public needs, and also establish the current status of language technology in major areas of technology in India and the world.

It would suggest technology development goals to be set for the programme as mission projects and other longer term projects (ranging from one to three years) and look at measures by which these goals can lead to deployable systems.

It would also suggest strategy to achieve the technology development goals and its deployment.

It would also suggest evaluation criteria and mechanism to measure development efforts and identify major gaps in technology, data collection, trained manpower, etc., and recommend remedial action, an official release said, adding that it would also identify major opportunities worldwide for language technologies that get developed in India.
