TN foodgrain traders protest

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association will join the proposed Bharat bandh called by the Confederation of All-India Traders on February 1 to register their protest against the shifting of the liability of service tax on trade and industry.
The Secretary of the Association, Mr V. Dhanasekaran, in a statement here, citing the August 6,1999, Supreme Court judgment with reference to service tax, said it would be unfair to fix the responsibility of registration, collection and remittance of the tax on trade and industry, which only the service provider, namely, goods transport agents, should perform.
The present direction would affect severely scores of people engaged in trade and industry. To find a solution, it is necessary to immediately form a committee giving representation to trade and industry. Under the circumstances, the association has to positively respond to the call, he said.
The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TNCC&I) has also announced its intent to participate in the proposed bandh.
The TNCC&I, at an explanatory meeting held over the weekend, held the Centre's decision to shift the liability "illegal and a clear transgression of the pronounced judgment of the Supreme Court."
