Cauvery Delta farmers irked by DPC move on coarse paddy

Madurai , Jan. 28

FARMERS in the Cauvery delta region are worried over the refusal of direct purchase centres (DPCs) to procure paddy varieties like `Jothi'.

According to the General Secretary of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, many farmers have raised the `Jothi' (red rice) variety as it enjoyed good demand in Kerala market. The Government should purchase this variety and send it to Kerala, he has suggested.

The General Secretary of the Federation of Farmers Associations of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, Mr Arupathi Kalyanam, has said that the DPCs are refusing to accept other coarse varieties such as CR 1009 and ADT-41.
