TATA Teleservices, which provides telecom services under the Tata Indicom brand, on Monday launched its operations in Kerala by offering a number of services, targeting a subscriber base of one lakh in the near future.

To begin with, the company has rolled out the services in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode, before reaching out to another 109 towns in the State in the next two months, said Mr M.A. Madhusudan, Chief Operating Officer of Tata Teleservices Ltd, at a press conference here.

Mr Madhusudan said the company would offer the mobile, fixed wireless and public telephone booths in Kerala. "We have 10,000 orders now pending... We will have a lakh customers in the state very soon," he said.

He said Tata Teleservices has earmarked an investment of Rs 325 crore for Kerala in the first phase, which will see its cell sites increasing to 300 by March this year from the current 93.

Tata Teleservices is the latest telecom operator to enter the Kerala and it will compete with BPL Mobile, Idea, BSNL, AirTel and Reliance Infocomm.

Mr Madhusudan said Tata Teleservices would offer the Tata Indicom Walky, a fixed wireless phone service, the `Push to Talk' mobile phone that offers cheaper long distance calls, and public telephone booths. The normal mobile phone services of Tata Indicom would be introduced shortly.

The True Value exclusive Tata Indicom shops will also come to Kerala. "We will set up 260 True Value shops to sell prepaid services across the state," he said.

Tata Teleservices currently operates in 20 telecom circles across the country, providing its services to over 2.82 million customers in 700 towns. The company plans to add another 300 towns by March this year.
