Foreign Trade Chile keen to boost agri trade ties Our Bureau
Chennai , Jan. 23 CHILE, which is in the process of forging a free trade agreement with India, is looking to increase trade ties with agriculture as one of the focus areas. According to Mr Orlando Morales Valencia, Chile's director of agriculture and livestock, both the countries will start exchanging agriculture information and expertise on related areas such as biotechnology, sanitary and phyto-sanitary surveillance and export-import certification from March. Addressing reporters here, he said that this follows an agreement between the Agriculture Ministries of Chile and India, which will also pave the way for export of fresh fruits such as table grapes, apples and pears and stone fruits such as peaches and plums from Chile. In turn, it hopes to import a range of fruits, food grains and plantation products from India. Chile is framing legislations relating to genetically modified crops while India has started commercialising them. Indian expertise would be valued in Chile, he said. For Chile, fresh fruits exports constitute 23 per cent, valued at about $7,000 million, of its total exports. It is a global leader in fresh fruits exports and accounts for about 50 per cent of exports of fresh fruits in the southern hemisphere. Chile's commercial agriculture attaché in Delhi, Mr Gonzalo Ibanez, said that there was potential for growth as 35 per cent of its food products export was to Asia, of which only one per cent came to India. Trade volume was equally small the other way also, he said.
