Port infrastructure

In the rush to regain their lost glory, Indians have made several advancements and breakthroughs in science, technology, medicine, space research etc with the help of an abundant pool of resources and skills.

However, one field has not received the attention it so vitally needs — development of sea-ports and road and highway infrastructure connecting the major ports.

Even when the various ports in India are struggling to handle the ever-increasing container traffic, the government seems uninterested in developing new ports.

The Vizhinjam port in Thiruvananthapura, Kerala, which is located just 3 km away from the international sea route with a natural depth of 25-30 metres, is unique in many ways.

If completed, the port could become one among the top five major ports in the country and can handle a major part of our cargo movements, currently handled by ports in Dubai, Colombo and Singapore.

It is time the Government acted on this issue. Vizhinjam port is a matter of `when' and not `whether', so the government should speed up its completion.
